The Prometheus hung in orbit around an alien world, its sensors cataloging wonders that would rewrite every science textbook on Earth. Captain Elena Vasquez stood before the communications array, preparing for the most important transmission of her life.

"Earth Command, this is the Prometheus. We have made contact with an intelligent species."

Static. Then: "Prometheus, describe the encounter."

Elena thought of the crystalline beings who had welcomed her aboard their ship. Of the technology centuries beyond human capability. Of the warning they had given her.

"They're peaceful. Curious about us. And they have a message for humanity."

"What message?"

Elena took a breath. "They say there are others watching us. Other species, less friendly, who see humanity as a threat. Our first contact with the Crystalline was observed by at least three hostile civilizations."

The silence stretched. Finally: "What do the Crystalline suggest?"

"They've offered us protection. A seat at their alliance table. But there's a condition."

"Name it."

"We have to stop killing each other first. They won't ally with a species at war with itself."

More silence. Elena knew what she was asking—an end to conflicts that had burned for centuries.

She also knew it was humanity's only chance.
