The artifact lay on Aldric's desk, pulsing with a faint blue light that his colleagues would have dismissed as bioluminescence. But Aldric knew better.

Thirty years of ridicule. Thirty years of being called a crackpot, a fool, a dreamer.

Now, holding the Orb of First Light in his trembling hands, Aldric Thorne knew he'd been right all along.

"Magic is real," he whispered to his empty office. "It was always real."

The orb responded to his words, growing brighter. Symbols began to appear on its surface—a language older than civilization.

And then it spoke to him.

"YOU HAVE FOUND US, SEEKER. NOW THE QUESTION BECOMES: WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE KNOWLEDGE?"

Aldric thought of his colleagues who'd mocked him. The institutions that had rejected his papers. The world that had called him mad.

"I'm going to change everything," he said.

The orb pulsed once more. "THEN LET US BEGIN."
